After all, we spend a great deal of time at work, so it’s vital that we get satisfaction from what we’re doing every day.
Whether you’re just starting out in your field, or you’re a seasoned professional, the key to career success is passion and determination! As such, we’ve pulled together a guide which outlines the six steps you can take to help you get the career success you deserve.
1. Define success
First and foremost, you need to define what career success means for you. This will be different for everyone. Is it a high salary? Good work-life balance? Running your own business?
Whatever it is, you need to decide what constitutes success in your eyes and what is going to leave you feeling proud of your achievements and happy in your career.
2. Set your goals
Once you have a good idea of where you want to go with your career and what you want to achieve, you can put realistic goals in place to help you get there.
Break down your journey into smaller steps. For example, taking on a new training course or gaining a new qualification – whatever it is you need to do to reach your overall career goals.
Who you need to work with or learn from to reach…..
Then, set yourself a timeframe in which you’d like to complete these. You should review your goals each year (various levels of goals and annually is too infrequent) to see how you’re getting on and change or add to these when necessary.
3. Take ownership
Taking ownership of your career is extremely important and can help you to feel in control. It can be all too easy to think ‘well I didn’t get that promotion because my boss likes them more’, or ‘I didn’t take that training course because I was just too busy’. But this negativity won’t get you anywhere.
If you want to achieve career success, you need to take charge of your own goals and put in the hard work to get there.
4. Don’t be a perfectionist
This may be harder for some than others, but it’s OK if some things aren’t perfect. If we set ourselves career goals, it can be easy to feel you’ve failed if you haven’t ticked every single box.
But the truth is, sometimes things simply don’t go to plan. If you focus only on perfection, you might find that you fall behind – or worse, fall out of love with your job altogether. Appreciate the setbacks and view them as an opportunity to learn and grow.
Networking is important. It gives you the opportunity to meet like-minded professionals who may be able to help you excel in your career. You might find a mentor, you might even become one! Either way, you’ll build a strong network of people around you who can help you out in the future when you’re ready to take the next step.
And there are a number of ways you can do this. You might choose to attend industry events, or join online forums. You could also join professional platforms such as LinkedIn. It’s also important to get to know your colleagues, perhaps even spend time working with other departments to gain a better understanding of what it is they do.
6. Volunteer yourself
And finally, don’t be afraid to put yourself forward for new projects or ask for more responsibilities. This will help you to grow and develop in your career and shows that you’re prepared to take the next step. This will also open you up to new opportunities and ensure you’re always learning new skills.
